The Wisdom of Crowds: Cognitive Ad Hoc Networks

چکیده
Cognitive ad hoc networks are a natural endpoint for the evolution of the contemporary mobile, ad hoc network (MANET). In order for ad hoc networks to fulfill the promise that their title implies, they need to move beyond being merely mobile, peer-to-peer, distributed systems. For an ad hoc network to deliver a truly ad hoc networking service, it needs to evolve to a stage where the network can discover networking solutions beyond those tested in the laboratory, and which allow it to provide a networking service which is fit for purpose. In this chapter, we suggest that the cognition cycle, as envisioned by Mitola [34], be adopted by the network-wide system. To do this we differentiate between node and network-level cognitive processing and show that there is need to investigate how a cognitive ad hoc network would go about orienting, deciding, planning and learning. While network-level cognition may be more readily incorporated into infrastructure-based networks, the transient and distributed nature of mobile ad hoc networks is a challenging environment for any kind of collective activity, be it agreement or learning. In order to meet the challenge, it is necessary to look beyond the traditional methods used in distributed systems. Therefore, we present a discussion of some observed social conventions which enable loosely associated groups of people to pool knowledge so as to collectively learn and to make decisions which would otherwise require the intervention of a centralized expert. The title of the chapter is in fact borrowed from one of the titles referenced in the discussion, namely the book by James Surowiecki entitled The Wisdom

In recent years, Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) have emerged as one of the most active areas in the field of technology to provide a wide range of services, including road safety, passenger's safety, amusement facilities for passengers and emergency facilities. Due to the lack of flexibility, complexity and high dynamic network topology, the development and management of current Vehicular A...
متن کاملAssessment of DSACC and QPART Algorithms in Ad Hoc Networks
The rapid advancement in wireless over wired has augmented the need for improving theQuality of Service (QoS) over such wireless links. However, the wireless ad hoc networkshave too low bandwidth, and establishing a QoS in these networks is a difficult issue. So,support of quality of service in ad hoc networks is the topical issue among the networkscience researchers. In this research we are go...

In this keynote we give an introduction to wisdom of crowds in the Web, the long tail of web content, and the bias involved in the generation of user generated content (UGC). This bias creates the wisdom of ad hoc crowds or the wisdom of a few. Although it is well known that user activity in most settings follows a power law, that is, few people do a lot, while most do nothing, there are few st...
متن کاملThe Success of Question Answering Communities: How Diversity Influences Ad Hoc Groups
Question and answer (Q&A) web sites have become increasing popular in recent years. These communities are social media platforms that enable users around the world to easily share their knowledge with each other. Q&A sites are based in part on the wisdom of crowds [Surowiecki 2005], i.e., everyone involved in the community can contribute something, and through collaborative production they crea...
متن کاملA Survey of Solutions to Protect Against All Types of Attacks in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
In recent years mobile networks have expanded dramatically, compared with other wireless networks. Routing protocols in these networks are designed with the assumption that there is no attacker node, so routing protocols are vulnerable to various attacks in these networks. In this paper, we review the network layer attacks and then we simulate the impact of black hole attack on ad hoc on demand...
